Preparing for the 11 Plus can be a challenging journey for both children and parents. We hope to relieve that stress by providing fun interactive sessions which focus on the core skills your child will need for success. We aim to build confidence so your child feels able to tackle problems independently with a smile on their face.
The tutoring sessions are designed to break the learning into bite-sized chunks, which are regularly practised. Strengths and weaknesses in the core skills are easily identified in small group settings and homework will be tailored to help your child flourish.
Here in Gloucestershire, the grammar schools formally assess pupils for entry via the 11 Plus assessment in the GL format. The 11 Plus aims to test your child’s attainment in core subjects and academic potential. The GL format tests your child’s ability in four subjects; maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Verbal and non-verbal reasoning are not national curriculum subjects, so are not taught in primary schools. These subjects are included in the 11 Plus to test the cognitive ability of children to think critically or abstractly to decipher patterns, spot connections and problem solve. The English and maths test cover all the Key Stage 2 national curriculum objectives but also includes the Year 6 content which children will not yet have encountered by time of the exam.
Our 11 Plus tuition is split into two different categories depending on your child’s current school year.
Mathematics - number fluency, number reasoning, data, geometry, measurement, algebra, ratio and proportion.
English – comprehension focus, grammatical skills, cloze procedures and spelling.
Verbal reasoning – finding words (in jumbled words or hidden words), vocabulary synonyms/antonyms or finding connections), building words (transferring letters, morphing the words), using logic, as well as a focus on codes and sequences.
Non-verbal reasoning – interpreting shapes (odd one out, matching groups, matrices, find a code) and manipulating shapes (parts within a shape, rotations, reflections, nets and cubes, 3D shapes).
Group sessions are priced at £15 per student per hour. Places are available in a 6 week block. Please see terms and conditions for full details.
This course is perfectly designed for 11 plus exams preparation for the more challenging work in Year 5. Starting early with tuition will mean that your child has time to understand the concepts and have plenty of time to practise the different types of questions as well as learning to work systematically. Subject areas such as non-verbal and verbal reasoning are not taught in primary school and starting preparations early can make a huge difference to their success.
The weekly face to face11 plus tutoring lessons are all taught directly by Michelle, a qualified teacher and will cover all four subject areas: maths, English, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. The sessions are delivered in small groups of no more than six pupils in order to keep sessions affordable but also help create an interactive experience for the children where they can share their ideas and learn in a fun, supportive environment. Each session is an hour long and will include optional homework for children to continue practising their skills at home.
The foundation sessions will cover the following topics:
Mathematics - topic work, numerical reasoning, problem solving and analysis.
English – comprehension focus, grammatical skills, cloze procedures and spelling.
Verbal reasoning – processing verbal information, applying logical thinking and problem-solving skills, find and follow patterns and rules, determine word meaning, spell accurately, apply basic maths skills. There will also be a large focus on vocabulary using cloze exercises and quizzes to progress learning.
Non-verbal reasoning – 2D and 3D spatial brain training activities and puzzles.
This course is designed as 11 plus exams preparation. Year 5 is the most important year for preparation in the 11 Plus as the exam is taken in the September of Year 6. Weekly lessons are all face to face and taught by Michelle, a qualified teacher. The sessions will focus on the four subjects areas: maths, English, non- verbal reasoning and verbal reasoning. Sessions will cover core content and focus on the aspects that children notoriously find trickier. The maths and English content of these sessions will also be focusing on areas of the Year 6 national curriculum which will not have been covered yet in school. The sessions will also familiarise children with the question and answer layout of the papers. There will be opportunities to take mock exams at the end of each term after Christmas to track progress, these will be marked and full feedback provided to determine your child’s next steps.
The foundation sessions will cover the following topics with some examples given:
